Sports Premium

The government currently provides funding of £320 million per annum, to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and Sport in primary schools. This funding is being jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and will be allocated to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this, providing they are used to meet 5 key indicators.

The 5 key indicators are:

• The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
• The profile of PE and Sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
• Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and Sport
• Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
• Increased participation in competitive sport

Possible uses for the funding might include:

• Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
• Supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
• Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
• Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
• Running sports competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
• Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
• Providing places for pupils on after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs
• Pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools
